Independent Innovation Leads the Development of Chemical Science and Technology
On October 26th, the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association hosted a significant national science and technology conference at the Great Hall of the People. The event aimed to review and summarize the remarkable achievements and valuable experiences accumulated over the past 30 years since the reform and opening-up era, with particular emphasis on the progress made during the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period. Attendees engaged in in-depth discussions about the current challenges and future tasks facing the chemical engineering sector.
The conference also recognized outstanding individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the advancement of science and technology within the industry over the past five years. Gu Xiulian, chairman of the All-China Women’s Federation and former vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, delivered an important speech and personally inscribed a message for the occasion. Li Yongwu, president of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association, gave a keynote address highlighting the industry's development and future direction.
Gu Xiulian commended the impressive achievements of the chemical science and technology sector, urging scientists and engineers to follow the scientific concept of development and pursue independent innovation. She emphasized the importance of providing strong technical support as the industry moves toward a new path of industrialization.
In his report, Li Yongwu highlighted that since the reform and opening-up 30 years ago, China's chemical science and technology industry has made considerable progress. Since 1985, when the country first introduced science and technology awards, the industry has received 65 national technical invention awards and 513 national science and technology progress awards. Among these, 18 were awarded as national technology invention awards and 29 as national science and technology progress awards since the Eleventh Five-Year Plan. Additionally, the industry has earned 2,383 industrial science and technology progress awards and 89 technical invention awards, with 570 and 57 respectively awarded since the Eleventh Five-Year Plan.
Since the Eleventh Five-Year Plan, the chemical engineering field has achieved several major breakthroughs: developing core patented technologies, enhancing enterprise competitiveness through innovation, promoting energy conservation and emission reduction, and advancing key equipment technologies.
Li Yongwu outlined the priorities for the later stages of the Eleventh Five-Year Plan, including accelerating energy-saving and emission-reduction technologies, strengthening coal chemical industry innovations, and investing in research institutions and talent development to build a comprehensive innovation system.
The conference honored 232 recipients of the "National Outstanding Scientific and Technical Workers in Chemical Industry" title and 13 winners of the "Outstanding Scientific and Technological Contribution Award for Youth." These included 25 2008 Association Invention Awards and 236 2008 Association of Scientific and Technological Progress Awards. Honorary certificates were presented, and 32 companies were recognized as "2008 China Chemical Industry Model Innovation Enterprises."
