The Southtown Star has published an article detailing the recent developments surrounding the leadership change in the Chicago Ridge Fire Department, following the resignation of its chief:

Oak Lawn Fire Chief George Sheets is about to take on a new role—but he won’t be leaving his current position anytime soon.

A unanimous agreement approved by the village board last Tuesday allows Sheets to remain as Oak Lawn’s fire chief while also stepping into the role of Chicago Ridge’s fire chief through 2016. The Chicago Ridge Village Board is expected to formally approve the arrangement at its meeting on July 15, according to Oak Lawn Village Manager Larry Deetjen.

Deetjen explained that the idea came from Chicago Ridge Mayor Chuck Tokar, who approached Oak Lawn with the proposal. Tokar was unavailable for comment on Tuesday night regarding Sheets’ potential new role. This move follows the recent resignation of Chicago Ridge Fire Chief Robert Muszynski, who cited “personal differences” with local officials—particularly Tokar—over proposed changes to the department.

Several Chicago Ridge trustees have indicated that Muszynski’s resignation was encouraged by Tokar, though the board officially accepted his resignation last month. The tension within the department escalated after the village board suggested that Tokar explore more efficient ways to provide firefighting and ambulance services—a proposal that has raised concerns among firefighters about job security.

Tokar has previously mentioned that options under consideration could include outsourcing ambulance services or even disbanding the fire department in favor of joining a fire protection district. These ideas have sparked worry and uncertainty among the city’s firefighters.

Christ Schmelzer, president of the Chicago Ridge Professional Firefighters Local 3098, recently noted that the atmosphere at the firehouse has been tense since Muszynski left and the potential changes were announced.

While Deetjen declined to comment directly on the ongoing discussions about alternative firefighting models, he did express confidence in Sheets, saying he expects the new chief to quickly get up to speed. Deetjen added that Sheets will soon meet with the 13 firefighters in Chicago Ridge to better understand their needs and build relationships.
