This process is widely used in the commercial and military aircraft industry to fabricate tubing assemblies for hydraulic, fuel, oxygen, and similar fluid distribution systems. Currently, elastomeric swaging is used to fabricate tubing assemblies for both low and high pressure fluid systems made from aluminum, steel, stainless steel alloys, and titanium. Elastomeric swaging of end fittings produces fluid tight connections without the loss of material strength associated with thermal joining methods such as brazing and welding. In addition, it creates high-quality mechanical tube fitting attachments without the wall thinning and local stress concentrations caused by mechanical roller swaging or older bite type designs.
Beyond aerospace, we are now introducing our internal elastomeric swage machines and support tooling to other industries. These machines can be used in marine engines, automobiles, trucks, refrigeration, air conditioning, motorcycles, motor homes, construction equipment, and tractors. The process involves cold forming using extremely high radial forces applied to the internal surfaces of a tubular member, displacing the tubing into grooves in an external end fitting or into a shaped die cavity to produce specific tube end forms like beads.
The internal swaging forces are generated by the controlled linear travel of a high-strength drawbolt that compresses an elastomeric expander against a static retainer ring. During the swaging cycle, the controlled compression of the elastomeric material forces the tube wall radially into internal circumferential grooves in the end fitting skirt, resulting in a strong, leak-proof mechanical attachment. The tube end fitting is contained within a precision-matched split die cavity to provide a reactionary force and prevent distortion.
Elastomeric swaging is a fast, efficient, and practical method for attaching tube ends. It eliminates expensive post-processing operations like radiographic or ultrasonic inspection often required for welded or brazed connections. We manufacture all forming dies and swage tooling for each of our elastomeric tube swagers. Pricing is determined based on customer requirements and quantity. Each machine complies with applicable safety standards and electrical compatibility needs. An operation and safety training package is included with every purchase, along with a six-month warranty on parts and workmanship.
The internal elastomeric swage fittings were designed to offer a simple and reliable method of attaching separable end fittings to rigid tubes in the demanding aerospace environment. These fittings serve as a lightweight and cost-effective alternative to welding, brazing, or other mechanical attachment methods.
**Advantages of Internal Swaging**
Internal swaging is a mechanical method for attaching fittings to tubing, achieved by forming the tubing outward into grooves within the fitting. This technique offers several benefits:
- No special tube end preparation (cleaning or sizing) is required.
- Fabrication is very quick, taking just seconds per connection.
- No X-ray inspection is needed.
- No flushing or ball-check test is necessary.
- Reduces scrap rates.
- Improves fatigue performance compared to brazed joints.
- No heat-affected zones or heat-induced distortion.
- No stress-relieving is required.
These advantages can lead to significant cost savings during installation. Eaton internal swage fittings are compatible with CAD/CAM systems for tube assembly production. Mechanical attachment at room temperature is particularly beneficial in situations where flammability is a concern.
**Fitting Features**
- Fittings are made from high-strength alloys (e.g., 15-5 CRES, 7075 Aluminum, 6AL-4V Titanium).
- Flared fittings feature a machined metal sealing surface that prevents tube flare cracking.
- A 2-angle face design allows up to 4° angular misalignment.
- Various flareless styles are available, compatible with modern flareless systems.
- Lipseal fittings offer excellent sealing due to a flexible beam surface and maximum interface clearance.
- Available in sizes ranging from 1/4" (6.35 mm) to 1-1/2" (38 mm).
