Recently, ABB received an order from DFDS to supply shaft engine blocks and turbochargers for DFDS' two new 6700-car ro-ro ships.
ABB wins shaft engine block and turbocharger order
It is reported that the two new ro-ro ships were built by Jinling Shipyard and delivered in early 2019. There are also alternative orders for 4 ships.
According to the agreement, each ship will be equipped with two shaft generator sets, and the shaft generator set uses the power from the main engine, so that the safety of the ship can be ensured if the auxiliary machine fails.
Thanks to the alternative power source, the shaft generator set also optimizes the mainframe and propeller pitch, and the overall fuel efficiency of the vessel is improved regardless of the speed. When you are at the port, you can also turn off the auxiliary equipment on the ship to reduce pollution emissions and vibration.
In addition, each ship's two-stroke engine also chose to install two high-performance A270-L turbochargers to further reduce fuel consumption and pollution emissions. The installed turbocharger gives the engine greater operational flexibility and is designed for optimum efficiency at low or ultra low speeds.
Juha Koskela, general manager of ABB's ship and port business, said, “Efficiency and safety have become the cornerstone of the shipbuilding industry. Our shaft generators are not only environmentally friendly but also very cost effective.”
