Hubei citrus containers without virus breeding technology

Citrus container seedlings are not limited by seasons, which significantly increases their survival rate. They skip the traditional seedling stage, yield higher outputs, and produce superior quality fruits. Moreover, they can bear fruit within a year, making them highly favored by fruit farmers. The main propagation techniques include: 1. Nutrient soil is prepared artificially and packed into containers of appropriate size. This helps eliminate pests and weeds through matrix sterilization. 2. Virus-free rootstocks are planted in these containers. Once the rootstocks reach a suitable thickness, virus-free scions are grafted onto them to ensure healthy growth. 3. After grafting, the survival rate should be checked regularly. Any weak or dead plants should be replaced promptly. The protective film should be removed once the shoots start growing, usually within 30 days after grafting, depending on the temperature. If some plants fail to grow, they should be patched with the same variety if possible. 4. Pruning the anvil is essential. After the first sprout appears, the upper part of the rootstock should be cut about 10–15 cm above the grafting point. Wait until the first shoot stops growing before cutting the remaining part. The cut must be smooth and clean. New shoots on the rootstock should be removed every 7–10 days, but avoid using hands to pluck buds directly. For varieties like Wenzhou oranges, which have drooping branches, the new shoots need to be straightened. A film can be used to tie the shoots to the support, and a second anvil should be set up once the branch is upright. 5. Topping and shaping are important for healthy growth. When the grafted seedlings reach 40–50 cm in height, topping should be done to encourage branching. After topping, new branches should develop at 30–40 cm from the top. The height for topping may vary depending on the citrus variety. Before topping, water should be provided sufficiently to promote branching. After the branches form, only 3–5 evenly distributed branches should be kept, while the rest should be pruned. 6. Fertilizer and irrigation management is crucial. Fertilization should be frequent and light, using well-decomposed animal or human manure as the primary source, supplemented with chemical fertilizers to meet the nutrient needs of the seedlings. These techniques ensure that citrus seedlings grow strong, healthy, and ready for early fruiting, making container propagation a popular and effective method among growers.
