Jim Skrabel witnessed a significant fire this morning in Joliet at 1701 Sierra Highland Court. Here's his firsthand account of the incident:
"A two-story home was engulfed in heavy flames on one side, which caused damage to the neighboring house. Engine 9, the first unit on scene, made a strong initial attack and managed to knock the fire down by the time I arrived. Two 1 3/4-inch lines were stretched from Engine 9, and Truck 9 had their jacks ready in case they needed to access the roof with the aerial device. The response included Engines 9, 8, and 10, along with Truck 9, B/C 2, and ambulances 8, 9, and 10."
The fire, which occurred on June 28, 2011, was quickly brought under control, but not before causing visible damage to nearby properties. Jim captured several photos that show the intensity of the blaze and the firefighters' swift response.
In one image, firefighters are seen using a hand line to tackle the last remnants of the fire near the soffit, after the main structure had been knocked down. Another photo highlights the damage to the neighbor’s house, where the siding was scorched from the intense heat. A third shot shows Truck 9 positioned and ready to deploy its main ladder if the fire had spread further. Finally, another image clearly displays the extent of the damage to the adjacent property, emphasizing how quickly the fire could have escalated without the quick actions of the responding units.
These images offer a rare glimpse into the chaos and coordination involved in a fast-moving fire situation.
