With the joint efforts of the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Luoyang Petrochemical Engineering Company and Shaanxi Xinxing Coal Chemical Company, China's first industrialized pilot plant for the production of low carbon olefins from methanol was completed and commissioned successfully in Huaxian County, Shaanxi Province. The successful commissioning of this device has laid a solid foundation for the optimization of the next phase of the scheme and the realization of long-term operation, and it has obtained a large number of reliable process and engineering parameters related to the construction of large-scale low-carbon olefin industrial devices.

It is reported that the production of olefins from methanol or natural gas via methanol is a technology that is at the forefront of research and development. In recent years, due to the high crude oil prices, many countries have stepped up the development of this technology and are about to enter the stage of industrialization. Based on the preliminary results of China's independent development, scientific research personnel carried out industrial trials of methanol to olefins using coal or natural gas as raw materials.

Since the 1990s, the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics and Luoyang Petrochemical Engineering Co., Ltd. have jointly developed the MTO technology and engineering complete sets of technologies. In August 2004, the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Luoyang Petrochemical Engineering Co., Ltd. and Shaanxi Xinxing Coal Chemical Co., Ltd. jointly signed a cooperation agreement for the “Methanol to Olefins Industrialization Test Project” and began the construction of industrialized experimental devices. Faced with the difficulties of new project technology, difficult engineering design, and short project cycle, all project personnel have sincerely cooperated and completed the project's complete set of technology development, design and construction.

The test results show that this test not only achieved the first-phase goal of opening the whole process, but also achieved a high conversion rate of methanol, and accumulated valuable experience for the promotion and application of this process technology.
