Excerpts from kvue.com:

Austin-Travis County EMS (ATCEMS) and local firefighters recently conducted a "Stop The Bleed" training session, teaching the public how to respond in life-threatening situations involving severe bleeding. This initiative aims to empower everyday people with the skills needed to save lives during mass casualty events.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, last year alone, the U.S. experienced more mass shootings than there are days in a year—647 incidents. And this year has already seen nearly 40 such events by the end of January, highlighting the urgent need for community preparedness.

In response, ATCEMS is focusing on force multiplication by training civilians to act as immediate responders. After-action reviews from numerous mass casualty incidents have shown that many deaths could have been prevented if proper bleeding control techniques had been applied right after the injury occurred.

For example, during the Pulse nightclub shooting in 2016, 49 people were killed, while 14 others were considered survivable based on the medical examiner’s findings. This underscores the importance of quick, effective action in the critical moments following an incident.

The "Stop The Bleed" training includes hands-on instruction on how to manage severe bleeding. If someone is experiencing life-threatening hemorrhage due to a penetrating injury like a gunshot or stab wound, the first step is to apply direct pressure to the wound. If bleeding continues despite pressure, a tourniquet should be used, but it's important to keep applying pressure even after placement.

In cases where a tourniquet isn’t available, medics recommend packing the wound with gauze or a clean cloth. Once the wound cavity is filled, maintain constant pressure until professional help arrives. Releasing pressure too soon can cause the wound to bleed again, which can be deadly.

Last week, ATCEMS held its first "Stop The Bleed" course specifically for LGBTQ+ bar owners and community members. The goal is to expand this training to other businesses and install "Stop The Bleed" kits in public spaces for easy access. Eventually, the department hopes to train the broader community so more people can be equipped to act in emergencies.

To make this vision a reality, ATCEMS is currently working on securing a grant to fund the program and the distribution of emergency kits across the city.
