The Fox Lake Fire Department was called to a fire in an apartment building located on the 500 block of Autumn Boulevard in Lakemoor around 11 PM last night. Arriving just four minutes after the initial call, responding units found flames visible through the roof of the three-story lightweight structure. Shortly after, a structural collapse occurred, escalating the situation significantly.
This incident was classified as a 3-11 for tankers and a Box Alarm due to the structural collapse, with at least 19 fire departments mobilized to the scene. Four tower ladders—Fox Lake, McHenry Township, Wauconda, and Round Lake—were deployed, along with multiple handlines and ground-level master streams to control the blaze.
Several notable apparatus were seen on scene, including:
- Countryside and Grayslake both sent their new apparatus to the fire.
- Engines from Antioch, Grayslake, and Round Lake, as well as squads from Fox Lake and Barrington, were equipped with Nightscan or Command Light towers, providing critical lighting during the operation.
- The Fox Lake Tower Ladder (Spartan/3D/Nova Quintech) in sector 1 used its articulating jib to reach over the building late in the fire.
- McHenry Township had four units on scene: engine, tower, tanker, and squad.
- Round Lake deployed three units: engine, tower, and tanker.
- Lake Villa had three units: engine, tanker, and ambulance.
- Grayslake sent an engine and a tanker.
- Lake Bluff responded with an engine, likely traveling the farthest distance of any department.
Photos from the scene show the intensity of the operation. Antioch’s American LaFrance/Alexis engine was seen using a Nightscan tower to illuminate the area, while the Fox Lake squad carried two powerful light towers. Countryside’s new US Tanker was already in action, and the Nova Quintech Sky Arm from Fox Lake demonstrated its versatility with the articulated jib.
ChicagoAreaFire.com has listed several departments that were present, including Buffalo Grove, Cary, Countryside, Lake Bluff, Lake Forest, Lake Villa, Libertyville, Long Grove, McHenry Township, Mundelein, Newport Township, and Wauconda. Larry Shapiro captured a great set of images from the fire, which can be viewed in his gallery [HERE]. This event highlights the coordinated effort of multiple departments and the importance of modern firefighting equipment in handling complex incidents.
