Film:
The specimen is clamped between the upper and lower chamber. The upper chamber is purged with an oxygen stream, while the lower chamber is purged with nitrogen. Due to the oxygen concentration gradient, oxygen molecules permeate through the specimen into the nitrogen side. These oxygen molecules are carried to the coulometric sensor, which generates a proportional signal, allowing calculation of the oxygen transmission rate and permeability coefficient.
Package:
The package is mounted on the lower chamber. The outside of the package is exposed to air or pure oxygen, while the inside is purged with nitrogen. Oxygen permeates through the package wall into the inside, where it is carried to the coulometric sensor, generating a proportional signal that allows calculation of the oxygen transmission rate.
