The next installment in our series on Chicago area fire trucks explores departments within MABAS Division 3 that have transitioned to red fire apparatus over the years. We also highlight a department that was always red, but once had an engine that stood out with a different color.
Deerfield Fire Department originally operated two Ward LaFrance P80 series engines with Ambassador cabs. Engine 720 arrived in 1973 equipped with a 1,250-GPM pump, while Engine 712 came in 1977 with a slightly larger 1,500-GPM pump. Both units were painted white over lime green, carrying 750 and 1,000 gallons of water respectively. These early units reflect the evolving standards and aesthetics of fire apparatus during the 1970s.

The Glenbrook Fire Protection District, formerly known as the Glenview Rural Fire Protection District, merged with the Glenview Fire Department in 1992. Initially, their trucks were red, but after the name change, they gradually transitioned to yellow. This shift is evident in their fleet, which included three American LaFrance Pioneer Series engines, one being a newer Pioneer II model. They also had a small squad and a 1968 Ford/Snorkel. The red 75-foot Snorkel was later refitted and returned in yellow from Pierce with a new four-door Arrow cab. Later purchases included a newer squad from Hackney and two Pierce Arrow engines.

Glenview has always maintained a red color scheme for its apparatus. In 1975, they acquired a Seagrave pumper-squad (Squad 8) with a 300-gallon water tank. This unit was initially painted white over lime green, but it was later repainted red while keeping the white roof. This unique piece shows how even long-standing departments occasionally deviated from their standard color schemes.

Northbrook Fire Department had a long history of using yellow apparatus, having previously been red. Their fleet included three engines, a Sutphen tower ladder, two squad units, and utility vehicles all painted yellow, along with matching yellow stripes on their modular ambulances. In 1996, they received new apparatus from Pierce, including two engines, a squad, and a ladder, which marked a shift to white over red.

Park Ridge Fire Department used white over lime green for many years, including a conventional Pirsch engine, a Mack CF/Pirsch mid-mount ladder, a custom cab-over Pirsch engine, and two Seagrave WB Series low-profile engines that matched in color. They also had matching stripes on their modular ambulances. Most of these units were later repainted red, except the mid-mount ladder.
