Recently, the advanced vertical drilling technology developed by Baker Hughes, an American energy company, was successfully implemented in the Dawan 1 well, a key exploration well located in the northeastern Sichuan Basin. This innovation effectively addressed the challenge of maintaining well control in formations with steep dip angles, significantly boosting the mechanical drilling rate by threefold.
Dawan 1 is the first major exploration well drilled by the company on the Dawan structure, with a planned total depth of 5,995 meters. Between 1,704 and 1,794 meters, the well deviation increased sharply from 3 degrees to 45 degrees, making it difficult to maintain a straight path. To address this issue, with support from Sinopec's headquarters, the Southern Company coordinated with the construction team to apply Baker Hughes' vertical drilling system starting at 1,829.96 meters. The operation continued until reaching a depth of 2,444 meters on February 16, covering a total footage of 555.04 meters. During this phase, the well inclination was reduced to just 0.3 degrees, and the average mechanical drilling speed reached 1.94 meters per hour. As of now, the well has been drilled deeper than 2,700 meters, demonstrating the effectiveness and efficiency of the new technology in complex geological conditions.
