What Type of Man/Personnel Basket Can I Use on My Lift?

By Mike Nelson, Posted in Forklifts, Materials Handling

One of the most frequently asked questions we receive at Koke is: "What type of man basket can I use on my lift?" The answer isn't always straightforward. That's why we've developed a step-by-step process to help our customers determine which basket is not only suitable for their needs but also compliant with all relevant safety standards.

Understanding the Different Classes of Man Baskets

There are three main types of man baskets used in different lifting scenarios: forklift-mounted baskets, overhead crane baskets, and construction or telehandler work platforms. Each has its own set of requirements and regulations that must be followed to ensure the safety of the personnel involved.

Forklift Baskets

Forklift Man Baskets

Forklift baskets are typically part of a two-person operation—one person drives the forklift, and another is in the basket. Safety is critical here, as the person in the basket is entirely dependent on the operator’s skill and attention. ANSI B56.1 outlines key safety practices, including proper construction, floor surfaces, and restraints. OSHA adds additional requirements such as securing the user, ensuring enough space (at least 18 square inches per person), and updating the forklift's data tag when a new basket is installed.

In California and Hawaii, an 84-inch high back is required for added safety, which is higher than standard requirements. These local laws should be considered if you're planning to operate in those states.

Crane Baskets – Lifting from Above

Crane baskets are designed for overhead lifting and suspending personnel in the air. OSHA 29 CFR sets strict guidelines for these types of baskets, including regular testing—every time they are used or every 8 hours, whichever comes first. The basket must be tested with a weight 1.25 times its rated capacity for 3 minutes. The lifting apparatus must also be certified, and federal projects may require a 5th choker line for added safety.

Construction Baskets – Telehandler Work Platforms

Construction Man Baskets

Construction baskets are often used on telehandlers or rough terrain forklifts. They come in both single-operator and dual-operator models. Regulations include 42-inch high sides, a maximum width of 20 inches beyond the truck's wheelbase, and the need for overhead protection. Always check local and state laws, as some areas may have stricter requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions About Man Baskets

Does it matter what I'm doing or what I'm lifting in the basket?

Yes, absolutely. When moving people, the regulations become much more stringent compared to moving materials. Safety is always the top priority.

Can baskets be customized in size or capacity?

Of course. We offer custom solutions, especially for crane baskets where there are no strict size limits as long as the crane can support the load.

Will I be able to get a new data tag from the manufacturer if I use your forklift baskets?

Most of the time, yes. Koke is a preferred vendor for many major forklift manufacturers, so we can help you get the necessary documentation.
