What Type of Man/Personnel Basket Can I Put on My Lift?

By Mike Nelson, Posted in Forklifts, Materials Handling

One of the most frequently asked questions we receive at Koke is: “What type of man basket can I use with my lift?” While it may seem straightforward, the answer isn’t always simple. That’s why we have a detailed process to help customers determine which basket is not only suitable but also compliant with safety regulations for their specific needs.

Types of Man Baskets

When it comes to man baskets, there are generally three main categories: forklift-mounted baskets, overhead (crane) baskets, and construction or telehandler platforms. Each type has its own set of rules and requirements, so it's important to understand the differences before making a choice.

Forklift Baskets

Forklift Man Baskets

Forklift baskets are typically used in a two-person operation, where one person controls the forklift and the other is inside the basket. This setup requires strict safety measures to protect the person in the basket. ANSI B56.1 outlines general safety practices, operating rules, and maintenance guidelines for forklifts, including specifications for how baskets should be constructed, the surface they’re placed on, and the restraints required.

OSHA also enforces safety standards for these types of operations. For example, each person in the basket must have at least 18 square inches of space, and there must be a way to secure the user to the basket. Additionally, you must consult the forklift manufacturer to update the data tag when adding a new basket. In California and Hawaii, the requirement is even stricter—baskets must have an 84-inch high back, which is higher than the national standard.

Crane Baskets / Overhead Lifting

Crane baskets are designed for overhead lifting and suspending personnel in the air. These are governed by OSHA 29 CFR, which sets strict testing and certification requirements. Every time a crane basket is used, it must be tested with a weight 1.25 times its rated capacity for three minutes. The lifting apparatus, such as the bridal, must also be certified. If your project is federally funded, a fifth choker line is often required for added safety.

It’s crucial to review all local and federal regulations before purchasing a crane basket. If you're unsure, don't hesitate to reach out to us—we're here to help guide you through the process and ensure compliance.

Construction Baskets / Telehandler Work Platforms

Construction Man Baskets

Construction baskets, often used on telehandlers, come in different configurations. Some allow single-person operation from within the basket, while others require a second person to control the machine from the truck. ANSI B56.1 and OSHA 29 CFR apply here as well, with requirements like 42-inch-high sides, a maximum width of 20 inches beyond the wheelbase, and the need for overhead protection.

Frequently Asked Questions About Man Baskets

Does it matter what I'm doing and what I'm lifting in the baskets?

Yes, absolutely. When moving people, the regulations are much more stringent compared to moving materials. Safety is always the top priority, and following the right protocols ensures everyone stays protected.

Can I get custom-sized or -capacity baskets?

Of course! We offer custom solutions depending on your needs. For example, with crane baskets, there are no strict size limits as long as the crane can support the load.

Will I be able to get new data tags from the manufacturer if I use your forklift baskets?

In most cases, yes. Koke is a preferred vendor for many major forklift manufacturers, so we can help you get the necessary approvals quickly.
