Firefighters in Niles were dispatched to 8839 N Washington Street on Friday afternoon, January 25, 2019, after reports of an explosion and smoke coming from the basement of a townhouse. Upon arrival, the first responding units noticed increasing smoke billowing from the eaves of the building and immediately requested a working fire upgrade. Firefighters entered the structure and successfully extinguished the fire. Additional mutual aid was provided by departments from Morton Grove, Des Plaines, North Maine, Glenview, and Park Ridge, helping to manage the situation effectively. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but no injuries have been reported so far. Local residents were advised to remain cautious and keep windows closed as firefighters worked to fully contain the blaze. The incident has sparked concern among neighbors, who are now closely monitoring the area for any signs of rekindling or structural damage.
