Chicago responded to a commercial structure fire this afternoon at 2543 W. Irving Park Road, just west of Western Avenue. The building, formerly home to Illinois Battery Mfg., was engulfed in flames, sending thick black smoke visible for miles. The first-floor commercial space was vacant, but the second floor housed an apartment that was occupied. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and a Level I HazMat response was initiated due to concerns about the contents of the building.
Firefighters from Tower Ladder 21 and Squad 2’s Snorkel used elevated master streams to combat the blaze. A special call was made for Tower Ladder 23, though it remained undeployed. Tim Olk, Steve Redick, and Larry Shapiro were on the scene after the fire was largely under control. Each captured the event through their lenses—Tim has a gallery HERE, Steve has a gallery HERE, and Larry has a gallery HERE.
Several images from the incident are available, showing firefighters working hard under challenging conditions. One photo captures firefighters on the lower roof trying to access the fire above the second-floor apartment. Another shows a firefighter climbing to the roof to assist his crew in hitting the visible flames. A third image highlights Squad 2's Snorkel working to gain access and ventilate the second floor. Tower Ladder 23 sat ready in Sector 3 but was never called into action. Firefighters from Tower Ladder 21 deployed their master stream into the building, while Engine 56 worked alongside other units at the scene.
Another shot shows a firefighter from Squad 2 steadying himself on a ladder during a difficult operation with limited visibility. Water from above created a dramatic effect as another firefighter from the same unit took a moment to catch his breath. A view across the street shows the intensity of the fire, with smoke pouring from the second floor. Firefighters from Squad 2, Tower 21, and Engine 112 worked in Sector 1, managing the situation as the fire continued to burn.
Steve also shared a short video capturing the scene. The incident remains a reminder of the dedication and bravery of Chicago’s emergency responders.
