Chicago responded to a commercial structure fire this afternoon at 2543 W. Irving Park Road, just west of Western Avenue. The building, once the home of Illinois Battery Mfg., was engulfed in flames, sending thick black smoke visible for miles. While the first-floor commercial space was vacant, a second-floor apartment was occupied. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and a Level I HazMat response was initiated due to potential hazardous materials inside the structure. Tower Ladder 21 and Squad 2’s Snorkel used elevated master streams to combat the fire, while Tower Ladder 23 was called in but never deployed. Tim Olk, Steve Redick, and Larry Shapiro were on the scene after the fire was largely under control. Each captured the event through their lenses, with Tim sharing a gallery [here], Steve [here], and Larry [here].
