China's largest mold industrial park settled in Hannan
Wuhan's automobile industry is accelerating, but the availability of high-quality local molds remains limited. Recently, the city announced a major investment of 1 billion yuan to establish the "Wuhan Mould Industrial Park" in the Hannan Development Zone, marking the largest mold production project in Central China. The initiative aims to strengthen the local mold and auto industries, creating a more integrated supply chain.
Once operational, the park is expected to generate an annual output value of at least 3 billion yuan and create employment for around 15,000 people. The project, set to begin operations in January next year, will be fully completed by the end of 2009. It is designed to attract 200 mold manufacturing companies from developed regions like Shandong, Guangdong, and Jiangsu, which are known for their advanced manufacturing sectors.
Currently, three companies have already expressed interest and are expected to move into the park by the end of 2009. Industry experts emphasize that the mold sector, often referred to as "the mother of industry," has a high return on investment, with a ratio of 1:10. Over the past decade, China's mold industry has grown by 15% annually, reaching 65 billion yuan in output last year. Provinces such as Shandong, Guangdong, and Jiangsu dominate the market, accounting for 80% of the national output. However, Wuhan lags behind, with its mold industry contributing only 2% of the national total.
The development of supporting parts has been a bottleneck for Wuhan's automotive industry. For example, Dongfeng Motor Company once sought bids for a mold, but all winners were foreign firms. Local companies failed to meet the required standards. To address this, the industrial park will initially focus on supporting the local auto industry by bringing in advanced mold-making enterprises from other regions.
In the next three to four years, the park will expand its reach nationwide, providing high-quality molds for various industrial projects. The project also aligns with Wuhan's broader goals of developing key industries, including automobiles. As demand for high-tech molds increases, building a large-scale, efficient mold production base has become a critical step in advancing the city’s modern industrial development.
