The researchers came up with a new method to predict which rivers would have floods. For this purpose, they measured how much water was stored in a watershed during the spring flood season.
Just as a bucket can only hold so much water, the same concept also applies to river basins, where the ground is saturated or near saturation, and flood conditions are ripe. By studying satellite data, researchers can predict the occurrence of major flood events five months in advance through statistical models.
