November 12, 2020 – Flyability collaborated with DroneUA to carry out a critical mission at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, aiming to check if nuclear waste was present in one of its decommissioned reactors.

One year ago, Flyability's team conducted an important inspection at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, the site of one of the worst nuclear disasters in history, which occurred in April 1986.

At the time of the disaster, Reactor 5 was still under construction and close to completion. Due to the urgency of the evacuation, there was no clear record of whether the holding pools in Reactor 5 had ever been filled with depleted uranium fuel rods.

Thirty-three years later, as part of the ongoing decommissioning process, the Chernobyl team needed to confirm whether any nuclear waste remained inside Reactor 5. Flyability’s pilots were tasked with flying into the reactor to answer two key questions: 1) Were there any fuel rods present? and 2) Had the necessary equipment ever been installed?

The Elios 2 is widely used in nuclear facilities for inspections, helping improve safety and significantly reducing downtime. However, this mission marked the first time a Flyability drone was used in a decommissioning effort.

“The Chernobyl mission was challenging,” says Charles Rey, Flyability’s Training Manager and one of the mission’s lead pilots. “The wall we had to fly over was 70 meters high, so losing signal would have meant losing the drone forever. But it was a huge success, and the Chernobyl team was very pleased with the footage we collected.”

The Chernobyl decommissioning team had limited experience with drones for remote visual inspections. The Elios 2 offered a unique solution, as its protective cage allows it to safely enter tight, indoor spaces and collect critical visual data.

Although the reactor structure is intact, access to certain areas where nuclear waste might have been stored was impossible due to their height. Flyability pilots operated from a pit about 25 meters deep—an area that would be completely inaccessible if the plant were still active.

Using the Elios 2, the team successfully flew into Reactor 5 and gathered enough visual data to confirm that the pools were empty and no nuclear waste was present. This was a significant discovery, as no prior evidence had shown the pools to be empty.

Following the mission, the Chernobyl team planned to include the Elios 2’s footage in a report submitted to international authorities regarding the status of the plant’s reactors.
