At approximately 4:40 AM on June 27th, the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Department, part of MABAS Division 12, received a call from a homeowner in the 500 block of Dawes Avenue reporting that their house was on fire. The scene quickly escalated as firefighters arrived to find heavy flames bursting from the front door. From the street, the house appeared to have two floors, but the condition from the rear told a different story. Stephen Wilcox, who was on the scene early, captured the intensity of the situation and shared detailed accounts along with several photographs.
The fire was classified as a MABAS box, indicating it required a coordinated response. Fortunately, the homeowners were alerted by their smoke detectors and managed to evacuate safely through the lower-level rear double doors. Craig Eldridge, a spokesperson for the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company, confirmed that no one was injured during the incident.
As the fire spread, it consumed the basement and first-floor rear area. A large deck extended across the back of the house, which was also engulfed. Stephen noted that the point of origin was near the steps on the right side and the double door opening. An earlier use of a cooking pit and three propane tanks in the area contributed to the rapid spread of the fire, with all the tanks reportedly exploding.
Firefighters used two-and-a-half-inch lines to bring the fire under control before deploying a tower to tackle the remaining flames. Despite the challenges, the water supply was limited, with only four-inch mains available in the area. This forced careful management of water usage. The tower proved effective in reaching the roof and attic areas, where the fire continued to burn. Unfortunately, both the second floor and the roof collapsed during the firefighting efforts.
Even after the main flames were subdued, fire still smoldered in the attic and through the roof. As the sun rose, the full extent of the damage became clear. Stephen’s photos captured the devastation, showing the once-familiar home now reduced to charred remains. The community was left in shock, and the incident served as a stark reminder of the dangers of fire and the importance of quick action and proper safety measures.
