Launch of a new plant in Ligand Port, Roquette, France
On March 15th, Roquette, the world's leading manufacturer of starch derivatives, officially commenced operations at its third wholly-owned facility, Roquette Starch (Lianyungang) Co., Ltd., located in Lianyungang. This marks a significant expansion for the company, which has been actively developing its presence in China and Asia. In addition to producing a wide range of multi-alcohol products, Roquette is now strengthening its position in the paper chemicals market, offering advanced solutions tailored to local needs.
According to Marc Daley, Commercial Director for North Asia at Roquette, the Lianyungang plant started construction last year and features a production line with an annual capacity of 70,000 tons. The facility uses cassava and corn starch as raw materials, applying a cationic modification process through specialized equipment. The production method is based on a dry process, enabling continuous operation, and the entire process is fully automated to ensure efficiency and quality control.
Since 2001, when Roquette established its first wholly-owned enterprise in Lianyungang, the company has grown significantly. It now operates three companies in the region: a sorbitol plant, a sugar polyol factory, and the newly launched modified starch facility. The total investment across these three ventures amounts to 160 million euros.
China is one of the largest paper-producing countries globally, having produced nearly 50 million tons of paper in 2023. According to Xia Hualin, Secretary-General of the China Paper Chemical Industry Association, modified starch plays a crucial role in the paper industry. It enhances the surface properties and strength of paper while ensuring smooth operation of papermaking machinery. Annual consumption of modified starch in China is estimated to be around 150,000 tons.
Founded in 1933, Roquette is a family-run business that has now reached its third generation of leadership. Today, the company transforms over 600 types of fine chemical products from agricultural raw materials, serving industries such as food and beverage, paper, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and animal feed. With 14 global facilities, Roquette processes approximately 6 million tons of agricultural products annually, reinforcing its position as a key player in the global starch and specialty chemicals market.
