The Niles Herald-Spectator recently published an article discussing potential collaboration between the villages of Niles and Morton Grove to build a shared fire station.

The mayors of Niles and Morton Grove are currently exploring the idea of combining resources to construct a joint firehouse. Niles Mayor Andrew Przybylo has suggested that building one new facility could be more cost-effective than repairing both of their current buildings. While the two fire departments would continue to operate independently, Przybylo believes that pooling resources could lead to long-term savings.

Przybylo noted that the discussions with Morton Grove Mayor Dan DiMaria are still in the early stages, and no official decisions have been made. He emphasized that both villages face significant repair costs for their existing fire stations, which makes the idea of a shared facility more appealing.

The Morton Grove Fire Department currently operates from two locations: its main station at the corner of Lincoln and Callie Avenues, and a second station at 8954 Shermer Road. Meanwhile, Niles has two fire stations—one located at Dempster Street and Cumberland Avenue, and another at 6611 Jarvis Avenue.

According to Przybylo, both firehouses are in need of major renovations. "If we have to spend several million dollars just to fix our building on Dempster, and Morton Grove does the same for theirs, it might make more sense to build one new firehouse instead," he said in an interview. "It would be more efficient to invest in a single, modern facility rather than maintaining two aging ones."

He also pointed out that because the two villages are geographically close, having a centralized fire station could improve response times and efficiency. In fact, fire trucks from both departments already respond to emergencies in each other's areas.

However, there are several challenges to overcome if the plan moves forward. These include selecting a suitable location and determining how to fund the project. So far, the idea hasn't gained much traction, but Przybylo remains optimistic about the possibility. Ryan Horne, the village administrator of Morton Grove, said his community isn’t entirely against the idea and is open to further discussion.

Thanks, Ron
