Last night (April 29, 2016), Chicago experienced a major fire classified as a 3-11 Alarm blaze at the address 3327 W. 48th Place. The building involved was a four-story structure measuring 100 feet by 300 feet, completely packed with mattresses. By the time I arrived at the scene, the incident was nearing its conclusion, but I wanted to share some images of the impressive apparatus that responded. I know several other contributors were present from the very beginning, so here are some photos of the specialized vehicles that were on-site, including the Mobile Battery Vehicle 6-3-9, the Rehab Unit 5-7-1, the 5-11 Club Canteen 4-0-2, the Communication Van 2-7-4, and the MVU 9-2-4 from O’Hare Airport, which was specially called in for this event. There were also two other vehicles, one painted entirely red and another with blue lights. As I walked around the perimeter, I couldn’t help but take a few shots of the firefighting equipment. Here’s a look at Chicago Fire Department's E-ONE Tower Ladder 39 under the night sky, shining brightly against the dark backdrop. It’s always fascinating to see how these machines perform during emergencies. In addition to the tower ladder, I managed to capture Engine 65, a workhorse of the department, standing tall and ready for action. Battalion 14 was also present, overseeing the operation, while Engine 34 was positioned strategically nearby. The communication van, Mobile Command Unit 274, was essential for coordinating efforts on the ground. It’s a critical piece of equipment that helps ensure everything runs smoothly during large-scale incidents. I also snapped a picture of the Mobile Battery Vehicle 639, which plays a vital role in providing power solutions in emergency situations. The Deputy District Chief 224 vehicle was another key presence, ensuring that command decisions were effectively communicated down the chain. One of the most interesting units on site was the Rehab Unit 571, which provided much-needed rest and recovery for firefighters operating in demanding conditions. The 5-11 Club Canteen unit was also there, offering food and refreshments to those working tirelessly through the night. As I strolled around the area, it struck me just how organized and efficient the entire operation was, despite the chaos of such a massive fire. These photos give you just a glimpse into the incredible resources and dedication that the Chicago Fire Department brings to every emergency they face.
