Last night on April 29, 2016, Chicago experienced a significant 3-11 alarm fire at 3327 W. 48th Place. By the time I arrived at the scene, the blaze had already been under control, but it was still an impressive sight. The building involved was a four-story structure, measuring 100 feet by 300 feet, and packed with mattresses, which fueled the intensity of the flames. I wanted to share some photos of the equipment that was deployed to handle this challenging situation. As far as I know, several other contributors were present from the very beginning, so these images capture some of the specialized vehicles that played key roles. You'll see the Mobile Battery Vehicle 6-3-9, the Rehab Unit 5-7-1, the 5-11 Club Canteen 4-0-2, the Communications Van 2-7-4, and the MVU 9-2-4 from O’Hare, which was specially called in to assist. There’s also an all-red vehicle and another one with blue lights, adding a striking visual element to the scene. The firefighters worked tirelessly throughout the night, and the images really capture the scale and complexity of the operation. Here's a glimpse of some of the equipment involved, including the impressive Chicago FD E-ONE Tower Ladder 39, which stood out prominently under the cover of darkness. There’s also Engine 65, Battalion 14, and Engine 34, each playing crucial parts in containing the fire. In addition to the firefighting vehicles, support units like the Mobile Command Unit 274 and the Mobile Battery Vehicle 639 were essential for coordinating efforts and ensuring the safety of everyone on site. The Deputy District Chief 224 was present to oversee operations, while the Rehab Unit 571 provided much-needed relief for the exhausted firefighters. The 5-11 Club Canteen unit was also on hand, offering food and hydration to those working through the long hours. It was a massive effort involving numerous resources, and these images give just a small taste of what went into managing such a large-scale fire. Despite the late hour, the dedication and professionalism of everyone involved were evident in every shot.
