A teenager is now facing charges after being linked to a significant blaze that swept through a vacant warehouse earlier this week. The fire, which escalated rapidly, reportedly started when the teen and a group of peers decided to light a small fire inside the structure, likely seeking warmth. However, things spiraled out of control as the fire grew beyond their control, spreading to nearby buildings and prompting a massive response from multiple fire departments.
According to Cicero town spokesman Ray Hanania, the initial call came in around 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday. The fire department found the 1829 54th Avenue warehouse fully engulfed in flames, with the inferno visible from miles away. The situation worsened overnight as the fire spread to a neighboring business, Central Steel Fabricators, located at 1843 54th Avenue. This adjacent building housed materials like cardboard and aerosol cans, raising concerns about potential explosions. Firefighters worked tirelessly for over 12 hours, with assistance from approximately a dozen neighboring fire departments, to finally extinguish the blaze early Wednesday morning.
Despite the extensive damage to both the warehouse and Central Steel Fabricators, thankfully, there were no reported injuries. The accused teenager, whose identity hasn’t been disclosed due to his age, was apprehended on Friday evening. Authorities noted that while he was accompanied by others, none of the other juveniles involved will face charges. Fire Chief Ron Opalecky expressed relief at the arrest, stating, "We’re very pleased that this fire has been resolved and a suspect has been identified."
Adding to the chaos, another fire broke out just hours later, early Thursday morning, at a residence on 1410 S. 50th Court. This second incident was deemed accidental, sparked by a malfunctioning space heater. Officials from the Cicero Fire Department and Police Department collaborated diligently to investigate and identify the root causes of these incidents. Cicero's town president, Larry Dominick, acknowledged the efforts of emergency responders, praising their swift action in mitigating risks and ensuring public safety. He emphasized the disruptions these events caused to local communities and commended the dedication of those working behind the scenes.
