This just came in from MyFoxChicago.com: A local teenager is now facing charges after allegedly setting off a major fire that devastated much of a vacant warehouse earlier this week in Cicero. According to town spokesperson Ray Hanania, the high school-aged boy was charged with two counts of arson after being identified as one of the individuals involved in starting the fire at 1829 54th Ave. It's believed the group may have started the fire to stay warm. Hanania mentioned that the accused teenager, whose exact age remains undisclosed, reportedly played with the flames, inadvertently allowing them to grow out of control. The group then fled the scene. Emergency services were first notified of the fire around 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday. By the time firefighters arrived, the warehouse was largely engulfed in flames, visible from miles away. The fire quickly spread to a neighboring building housing Central Steel Fabricators, which contained flammable materials like cardboard and aerosol cans. This added to concerns of potential explosions during the firefighting efforts. Despite the efforts of numerous local fire departments, the blaze raged for over 12 hours before finally being extinguished early Wednesday morning. Authorities say the boy was taken into custody on Friday night after providing key information led Cicero fire investigators and police to him. No further charges are expected to be filed against any other juveniles involved. In related news, NBC5 reports that the teenager was apprehended following tips that were passed along to the Cicero Fire Department. Fire Chief Ron Opalecky expressed relief at the resolution, stating, "We’re very pleased that this fire has been resolved and a suspect has been identified." The fire at the warehouse on 1829 54th Avenue grew rapidly, consuming the structure entirely. Neighboring businesses, including Central Steel Fabricators, faced significant damage as well. Firefighters from over a dozen departments worked tirelessly to contain the inferno. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Cicero's town president, Larry Dominick, acknowledged the challenges brought by such disasters while praising the dedication of the firefighters and law enforcement officers. He remarked, "These are terrible tragedies and many lives have been disrupted. I’m proud of the hard work that our employees and Fire and Police officials put into protecting our community and responding to emergencies." Thanks for the update, Dan.
