On November 17, 2015, at approximately 10:30 PM, Chicago firefighters were dispatched to 126 E 47th Street. Battalion 5 requested a Still & Box due to a fire in a one-story commercial building. Fire companies quickly evacuated the structure and shifted to a defensive position, leading to an upgrade of the alarm to a 2-11 shortly after. The fire spread to a two-story adjacent building to the east, causing the original structure to collapse and the exposure to be completely gutted. During the incident, strong winds and heavy, sporadic rain made conditions particularly challenging for the responding crews. Several tower ladders were deployed, including master streams from three tower ladders, along with Engine 19’s deck gun, a reserve Snorkel, and multi-versals. The coordinated effort was crucial in managing the rapidly spreading fire. Multiple contributors were on scene, and more detailed reports and updates will follow in the coming days. For now, here are some powerful images and a video captured by Larry Shapiro, offering a firsthand look at the intense firefighting operation.
