On November 17, 2015, around 10:30 PM, Chicago firefighters were dispatched to 126 E 47th Street. Battalion 5 requested a Still & Box due to a fire in a one-story commercial building. Fire companies quickly evacuated the structure and shifted to a defensive position, leading to the fire being upgraded to a 2-11 alarm shortly after. The blaze spread to a two-story adjacent building to the east, resulting in the original structure collapsing and the exposure being completely gutted. During the incident, strong winds and heavy, sporadic rain made conditions particularly challenging for the responding crews. Several tower ladders, including Engine 19’s deck gun, were deployed with master streams. A reserve Snorkel and multi-versals also played a key role in the firefighting efforts. Multiple contributors were on scene, and more detailed reports and updates will follow in the coming days. Here are some compelling images and a video captured by Larry Shapiro, offering a powerful visual account of the event.
