Six members of the Hudson Fire Department from western McLean County were injured, one fatally, while responding to a multi-vehicle accident on a snow-covered interstate near Hudson on Tuesday night. The incident occurred around 9:45 p.m. when a semi-truck lost control and struck emergency vehicles, including those from the Hudson Fire Department and the Illinois State Police.
Chris Brown, a 39-year-old volunteer firefighter with the Hudson Community Fire Protection District, was killed in the crash. According to Coroner Beth Kimmerling, Brown suffered multiple blunt force injuries to his head, chest, and pelvis after being struck by the semi-trailer. He was a full-time firefighter with the Bloomington Fire Department and is survived by his wife and two sons.
In a heartfelt statement, Hudson Fire Chief Dan Hite expressed deep sorrow over the loss. “Today we lost a member of our Hudson family,†he said. “We share in the sorrow felt by his loved ones, and we must not forget the valuable contributions he made to this community and the impact he has left on the Hudson Fire Department. The Hudson Fire Department is a close-knit family, and the loss of one of our own affects us all.â€
The names of the other injured firefighters have not been released at this time. Local officials are still investigating the cause of the accident, which happened during heavy snowfall on Interstate 39. Emergency responders were on the scene dealing with a serious collision involving several vehicles.
