Excerpts from kvue.com: In a recent initiative to empower the public in emergency situations, Austin-Travis County EMS (ATCEMS) and local firefighters conducted a "Stop The Bleed" training session. This program aims to teach individuals how to respond effectively during mass casualty incidents, particularly those involving severe bleeding. According to the Gun Violence Archive, last year alone, the U.S. experienced more mass shootings than there were days in the year, with 647 incidents reported. So far this year, nearly 40 mass shootings have already occurred before January even ends, highlighting the urgent need for public awareness and preparedness. The ATCEMS department is taking proactive steps by training community members to act as immediate responders. Their “Stop The Bleed†course equips people with life-saving skills that can make a critical difference in the moments following an injury. After-action reviews of past incidents show that many lives could have been saved if proper bleeding control had been applied right away. One such tragic event was the Pulse nightclub shooting, where 49 people lost their lives. According to the medical examiner's office, 14 of the victims might have survived if immediate bleeding control measures had been taken. The training itself is intense and practical. In cases of life-threatening bleeding from wounds like stab or gunshot injuries, medics advise first applying direct pressure. If the bleeding continues despite this, a tourniquet should be used—but pressure must still be maintained. For those without a tourniquet, packing the wound with gauze or even a clean shirt can help stop the bleeding. Once the wound is packed, it's crucial to keep the pressure on until professional help arrives. Letting up too soon can cause the wound to bleed again. These techniques are simple but incredibly effective when performed correctly. Recently, ATCEMS held its first "Stop The Bleed" course specifically for LGBTQ+ bar owners and community members. The goal is to expand this training to other businesses and install "Stop The Bleed" kits in public places for quick access. Eventually, they hope to train the broader community so everyone is better prepared in emergencies. To make this vision a reality, the department is actively seeking funding through grants. With support, they believe they can create a safer environment where more people know how to save lives in critical moments.
