Isuzu company: "Celebrating the Chinese market is equivalent to Isuzu"

In China's light truck market, a peculiar "ISUZU phenomenon" has left many consumers confused: various light trucks are equipped with the Isuzu 4JB1 engine, and companies like Qingling, Jiangling, and Ao Ling—often associated with the "bell" symbol—have raised questions about who truly represents Isuzu. According to recent statements from Moyuki Yoshito, Executive Director of Isuzu Motors in Japan, only two Chinese companies currently have access to Isuzu’s latest technology and are authorized to use the "ISUZU" brand: Qingling and the Guangzhou Isuzu Bus Factory. The relationship between Isuzu and Jiangling (JMC) is more complex. Although there was an earlier joint venture supported by the government in Jiangxi Province, Yoshito clarified that Isuzu no longer has direct business dealings with JMC. He also emphasized that JMC's claims of "aggregating Isuzu technology essence" are misleading. In fact, Isuzu has not provided any advanced technology to JMC. Regarding the widespread use of the 4JB1 engine in Chinese light trucks, Yoshito explained that in the 1980s, Isuzu signed a trade agreement with the Chinese government, transferring the 4JB1 engine technology to several Chinese manufacturers. However, over time, Isuzu and Qingling have continuously upgraded the engine, ensuring it now matches global standards. As a result, Qingling is the only company that can claim true technological alignment with Isuzu. Yoshito also highlighted that Qingling has become a key player in Isuzu’s global strategy. The company not only supports Isuzu’s domestic operations but also plays a critical role in its international expansion. Many key components are now produced domestically by Qingling, and they are integrated into Isuzu’s global supply chain. For instance, Isuzu is considering sourcing engine assemblies from Qingling, as it is one of only four qualified suppliers in the company’s procurement system, alongside plants in Japan, the U.S., Poland, and Thailand. Additionally, Isuzu previously sourced heavy-duty truck gearboxes from Qingling, a product that was once exclusively made in Japan. Now, even light vehicle gearboxes are being sourced from Qingling, marking a significant shift in the company’s supplier strategy. This deepening partnership underscores Qingling’s growing importance in Isuzu’s global commercial truck ambitions.
