Shenyang: Wuling vowed to “make it bigger” to compete for a micro-vehicle

SAIC-GM-Wuling has long been a key player in the mini-vehicle market, with models like the Wuling Zhiguang, Wuling Yangguang, and SPARK leading the way. Recently, during an interview with this reporter, the General Manager of Shenyang General Motors Wuling emphasized the company's ambitious strategy: "Our goal is to fully dominate the mini-vehicle segment, aiming for maximum growth and positioning ourselves as the leading model factory in this sector." According to recent data, from January to September this year, the domestic auto industry saw a 13% growth rate, while SAIC-GM-Wuling outperformed with a 26% increase. The "Light of Wuling" commercial vehicle set a record by selling 10,898 units in September alone. After adjusting the price of the 0.8L SPARK model, sales surged to 1,661 units in that period. As of October, the company's production and sales volume surpassed 180,000 units, capturing over 25% of the market—surpassing the annual output of 2003. Compared to other manufacturers such as Changan (36.82%), Hafei (1.98%), Changhe (8.63%), and FAW Ji (9.93%), SAIC-GM-Wuling ranks second in the industry. This rapid expansion is partly due to its innovative "China-Foreign" joint venture model. By implementing advanced management systems like the Universal Global Manufacturing System, the company achieved significant improvements between 2003 and June 2004, including a 230 million yuan reduction in procurement costs, a 20% increase in customer satisfaction, and a 50% rise in annual production efficiency. Additionally, the product development cycle was cut from 3–4 years to just 1–2 years. These changes have helped Wuling transition from a local state-owned enterprise into a modern, internationally competitive automaker. Looking ahead, the company plans to produce and sell 500,000 vehicles by 2010, capturing more than 25% of the domestic mini-vehicle market and 15% in overseas markets. This will position SAIC-GM-Wuling as a globally recognized manufacturing standard and a leading mini-car model factory.
