On Sunday, September 11, 2011, the Park Ridge Fire and Police Departments held a solemn memorial ceremony to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The event was hosted at Maine West High School, located at the corner of Dempster and Potter Streets. Attendees were honored by the presence of a piece of steel from the World Trade Center, which had been gifted to the city. This powerful artifact was transported into the ceremony by the Chicago Highlanders Pipe and Drum Band, along with the police and fire department honor guard. The steel beam, covered in an American flag and carried on the back of Park Ridge Engine 35, was treated with deep respect, symbolizing the sacrifice of those lost on that tragic day. Members of the honor guard carefully carried the flag-draped beam to the stage, where it remained throughout the event for visitors to reflect upon. Larry Shapiro, a local photographer, captured several meaningful moments of the ceremony. His images show the procession led by the pipe and drum band, the honor guard, and the engine carrying the historic artifact. The ceremony also included a 21-gun salute by the Park Ridge VFW color guard, a bell ringing honoring first responders, and a touching performance of "Taps" by a local resident. Throughout the event, the honor guard stood watch over the beam, ensuring it was respected and visible to all who attended. As the ceremony came to a close, the flag that had covered the artifact was carefully folded, marking the end of a heartfelt tribute to the victims of 9/11.
