On Sunday, September 11, 2011, the Park Ridge Fire and Police Departments held a solemn memorial ceremony to mark the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The event took place at Maine West High School, located at the corner of Dempster and Potter Streets. Attendees were honored to witness the arrival of a significant artifact from the World Trade Center, which had been presented to the city as a symbol of remembrance and resilience.
The Chicago Highlanders Pipe and Drum Band led a somber procession, accompanied by the police and fire department honor guard, as they escorted the steel beam into the ceremony. The artifact was placed in the bed of Park Ridge Engine 35, covered with an American flag, and treated with the utmost respect. The honor guard then carried the flag-draped beam to the stage, where it remained throughout the day, allowing visitors to pay their respects.
Larry Shapiro, a local photographer, captured several powerful images of the event. His photos show the emotional moments of the ceremony, including the pipe and drum band leading the procession, the honor guard walking alongside the engine, and the final folding of the flag that had covered the artifact.
The ceremony featured speeches, a 21-gun salute by the Park Ridge VFW color guard, and a bell-ringing tribute to the first responders who lost their lives on 9/11. A local resident also performed "Taps" to close the bell-ringing segment. Throughout the day, members of the honor guard stood watch over the steel beam, ensuring it was respected and visible to all who wished to remember those who perished.
