The Countryside Fire Protection District responded to a car accident reported on Monday afternoon at the intersection of Lakeview Parkway and North Fairway Drive in Vernon Hills. According to witnesses, one vehicle veered off the road and plunged into a nearby retention pond, with the driver still inside. In response, divers from the Libertyville Fire Department and the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District were quickly dispatched to the scene. A photo shows the SUV partially submerged in the pond, with its roof and luggage rack visible above the water. The driver managed to escape the sinking vehicle and was seen sitting on the roof when emergency responders arrived. With the help of bystanders, he was safely pulled from the water. Both drivers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Firefighters entered the pond to secure the vehicle for removal by Ernie’s Wrecker Service. Divers used straps to stabilize the SUV so it could be winched out of the water. A series of images captured the rescue efforts, including the moment the vehicle was finally pulled from the pond. Larry Shapiro documented the incident with several photos and a short video. Additional images are available here and here. The scene also featured the Libertyville Dive Squad and the newly equipped Lincolnshire-Riverwoods FPD dive team, highlighting the coordinated effort between local agencies. A video of the event is embedded below, offering a glimpse into the quick response and recovery process.
