Friday morning at around 7:30 AM, the Northbrook Fire Department received multiple calls reporting heavy smoke coming from a vacant home at 1017 Shermer Road. Upon arrival, first responders discovered thick smoke filling the entire ranch-style house, with the source traced to a fire in the basement. The incident was quickly escalated to a Code 4, indicating a working fire, and additional resources were dispatched from Glencoe and Northfield to assist in controlling the blaze. After the fire was fully extinguished, an investigator’s box alarm was called in, bringing in fire investigators from neighboring Division 3 departments to help determine the cause of the fire. This collaborative effort highlights the importance of regional cooperation during significant incidents. Tim Olk was among the first on the scene and captured several photos documenting the early stages of the fire. His images provide a powerful visual account of the firefighters’ efforts as they worked through heavy smoke and made critical decisions on how to approach the fire from the basement. The first image shows Northbrook firefighters arriving at the scene, where they quickly realized the fire was located in the basement after venting a window and advancing a hose line through the front door. Another photo captures firefighters battling through dense smoke to ventilate the roof while another team works to remove the front door. A third image highlights the truck company preparing to exit the roof as a hose line is deployed through the basement window to directly attack the fire. These images not only show the intensity of the situation but also the professionalism and coordination required to manage such a challenging fire.
