I just got back from the funeral service for Captain Ron Shulga of the Evanston Fire Department, which was held last Friday, May 19th, 2017. It was a somber occasion, but also one filled with a lot of warmth and memories shared by those who knew him best. The turnout was incredible—firefighters from all over came to pay their respects, lining up outside the church even before the service began.

There’s something about the way he frames his shots that really brings out the emotion of the event. You can almost feel the weight of loss mixed with the pride these firefighters have in their fallen comrade.
One of the most touching parts of the day was when several of Captain Shulga’s fellow officers spoke about what he meant to them personally and professionally. They talked about his leadership style, which wasn’t just about giving orders but about inspiring others through example. He had this unique ability to make everyone around him feel valued and respected, whether they were new recruits or seasoned veterans.
Another highlight was the procession after the service. Seeing so many fire trucks from different departments lined up side by side as we made our way to the cemetery was incredibly moving. It wasn’t just about showing respect; it was a testament to how much he meant not only to his own department but to the entire firefighting community.
As someone who wasn’t directly involved in the fire service, I still found myself deeply moved by the ceremony. There’s something inherently human about mourning together, especially when you’re part of a larger family like this one. It reminded me why communities rally around people like Captain Shulga—they represent more than just a job; they embody values like courage, dedication, and sacrifice.
