Ningxia Vegetable Industry Welcomes Development Opportunity

In recent years, Ningxia has implemented policy guidance and financial support to promote the rapid development of its vegetable industry. This has led to the formation of distinct regional production patterns: dehydrated vegetables in Shizuishan City, greenhouse vegetables in Yinchuan and Zhongwei, and cool-season and mountain vegetables in Guyuan. These developments have significantly boosted local agriculture and created new economic opportunities. By 2005, the vegetable industry in Ningxia had begun to take shape. The total area under cultivation continued to grow, with adjustments made to the regional, seasonal, and variety structures. The area for open-season vegetables—mainly spring and summer crops—was 884,000 mu, a decrease of 29,900 mu compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, the area for autumn vegetables, including dehydrated and mountain vegetables, increased by 6.8 million mu. A total of 16.1 million mu were under protected cultivation, with 114,000 mu dedicated to solar greenhouses. The variety of commonly grown vegetables expanded from over a dozen to more than 50, showcasing improved quality and efficiency. Ningxia’s annual vegetable output reached 3.579 million tons, with per capita consumption exceeding 600 kilograms. The industry generated an output value of 2.15 billion yuan, accounting for about 26% of the plantation sector. It became the second-largest agricultural industry in the region and one of the six major characteristic industries. The expansion of dehydrated vegetable areas helped alleviate raw material shortages for processing companies. Large-scale cultivation of onions, carrots, eggplants, beans, and potatoes capitalized on Ningxia’s low production costs and high-quality produce during summer and autumn. This enabled the region to supply South China's off-season market with “summer vegetables.” Huinong District in Shizuishan stood out for its favorable conditions—plenty of arable land, abundant sunshine, large temperature differences, and lower labor and energy costs compared to coastal regions. Its dehydrated vegetables, with high quality and diverse types, were exported to Southeast Asia, Japan, Europe, and the U.S., with 70% of products going overseas. At Yinchuan’s North Central Vegetable Wholesale Market, over 80% of summer and autumn vegetables were sold to other provinces. In 2006, Ningxia focused on vegetable production as a key industry for increasing farmers' income. In Yinchuan’s Jinfeng District, Liangtian Township, 573 greenhouses provided employment for 10,284 people, with an average income of 6,000 yuan per shed. Zhongwei saw significant growth, with vegetable planting expanding to 22,000 mu. Urban farmers’ cash income rose by 14%, with vegetable-related income reaching 678 yuan per person. Guanyin Village in Zhongwei cultivated 2,000 acres of vegetables, with exports reaching Xinjiang, Tibet, Qinghai, Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang. With 844 greenhouses, each yielded a net income of 12,000 yuan, and per capita income from vegetables hit 2,000 yuan. Lihe District’s five dehydrated vegetable enterprises leased 1,000 mu of farmland, improving production efficiency and achieving 100% order fulfillment. The industry’s high returns, productivity, and profitability made it a top choice for modern agriculture. Ningxia’s vegetable industry is well-positioned for international expansion, with efforts to attract merchants from Guangdong and Fujian to help promote its products abroad. During the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan,” the Ministry of Agriculture aimed to establish a vegetable export base in the northwest. By 2008, the goal was to expand vegetable planting to 1.2–1.3 million mu, with 200,000 mu of facilities and 200,000 mu of dehydrated bases, and an export rate exceeding 40%. Through strategic planning, Ningxia aims to strengthen leading enterprises, build pollution-free green production bases, and develop internationally recognized brands like “Xingzhongnan” and “Xia Lu.” The industry is growing rapidly, becoming a bright spot in rural development and a key driver of economic growth in the region.
