An explosion occurred at 640 Industrial Drive in Cary on Wednesday, prompting a major emergency response. According to the Chicago Tribune, three people were injured after multiple blasts at a paint manufacturing warehouse in northwest suburban Cary. Cary Police Chief Steven Casstevens confirmed that first responders arrived around 1:15 p.m. after an initial explosion was reported. A second explosion followed shortly after, causing significant damage to the two-story brick building, including the front being blown off and a small hole forming at the rear.
The fire was eventually extinguished by 5 p.m., and hazardous materials teams were called in due to potential chemical leaks from the facility. Three workers were taken to local hospitals, with their injuries described as non-life-threatening. One of the injured was flown to a burn center via helicopter, while the others were treated at Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington.
Local witness Jim Hursh, who runs Whitey’s Crane Rentals nearby, described hearing the blast and seeing heavy smoke coming from the building. He then witnessed a second explosion and saw emergency crews arriving shortly after. “Holy crap, there was major smoke coming out of the building,†he said.
The Cary Fire Department responded quickly, and as the situation escalated, they requested assistance from neighboring towns through MABAS Box #5-281. A Haz-Mat unit was also dispatched due to the risk of chemical spills. Multiple fire trucks, ambulances, and even a tower ladder were seen at the scene.
Tyler Tobolt, another eyewitness, shared photos showing the extent of the damage, including a large section of the building’s front wall blown out. He noted that flammable tanks near the site raised concerns about further dangers. The area was evacuated for about two blocks, and aerial footage from channels 5 and 7 captured the event.
Scott Peterson, a local photographer, provided additional details, noting that the incident turned into a second alarm with hazmat involvement. He described the destruction and the coordinated efforts of firefighters using large water lines and a tower ladder. “Unfortunately, I had to leave, but things got real interesting after that,†he wrote.
