RED Center, serving the Prospect Heights Fire Department, received a call around 4 p.m. today reporting a significant brush fire in the Potawatami Woods Forest Preserve, located off Portwine Road within the Prospect Heights Fire District. Based on the caller’s description of an area roughly the size of a football field being involved, the incident was escalated to a working fire.
The first responding units arrived and found a large fire burning in the forest preserve. Realizing the scale of the blaze, they quickly determined that more resources would be needed. Firefighters from Prospect Heights, Wheeling, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods joined forces with the Long Grove Brush 55 unit, using a brush rig to enter the affected area. However, the soft ground caused several vehicles to become stuck during the operation.
Several photos taken by Larry Shapiro captured the intensity of the scene. One image showed Long Grove Brush 55 returning to the fire zone, while another highlighted Prospect Heights firefighters using hand tools to combat the flames at the edge of the burn area. Another photo revealed how fast the fire was spreading, with flames flaring up quicker than crews could reach them. The Long Grove Brush 55 unit was also seen supplying handlines, while a wildland progressive hose pack was deployed by a Long Grove officer.
As the fire grew, it triggered a MABAS Brush Fire Box Alarm, bringing in additional companies such as water tenders, brush units, and engines from the Countryside Fire District, Buffalo Grove, Grayslake, Elk Grove Township, and Fox River Grove. The wind carried the fire into tall grasses, creating intense heat and thick black smoke visible for miles. At one point, the fire fully consumed the south end of the site, with water being deployed to control the flames.
However, the situation was further complicated when the Barrington Fire Department also had a large brush fire at the box alarm level, which required some of the same resources that were being sent to Prospect Heights.
Throughout the operation, firefighters stretched lines into position, waited for hoselines to be charged, and worked tirelessly to contain the fire. A photo showed a handline being deployed along the edge of the burn area, while another captured a Countryside FPD Tanker 411 assisting Long Grove Brush 55. As the fire was finally brought under control, the Cook County Forest Preserve Conservation Team arrived to complete the mop-up.
No injuries were reported at the scene. More images can be viewed [here](#) and [here](#). Larry Shapiro will also release a video of the incident once it is ready.
