The Wheeling Fire Department received a call around 2:30 AM from a resident of a townhouse on Fall Court in the Cedar Run development, reporting smoke in the building. The structure consisted of four units, two of which were unoccupied at the time. Wheeling Police arrived first and observed flames on the west side of the building. Before any fire crews reached the scene, the alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 working fire, prompting additional units from Buffalo Grove, Arlington Heights, and Long Grove to respond. Engine 24 was the first fire unit to arrive and pulled into the dead-end court. Engine 23 then took a hydrant at the end of the street to supply Engine 24. The fire occurred in a second-floor unit that was in foreclosure, featuring a private entrance with stairs on the west side. Firefighters initially knocked down the fire near the doorway but had to retreat when the stairs became compromised. They then accessed the second floor via a ground ladder, where they found remaining fire and noted that part of the kitchen floor had been damaged, with fire still present beneath it. As the situation escalated, the alarm was elevated to a Box Alarm due to concerns that the fire might spread along the exterior wall and into the shared attic space. Additional units from Deerfield, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Palatine, Northbrook, and Prospect Heights were dispatched, though they were soon released as the fire remained contained to the original unit. Larry Shapiro, a local photographer, arrived shortly after the main fire was under control and captured several images of the incident. He has compiled more photos in a gallery, offering a detailed visual account of the response and damage. Firefighters from Buffalo Grove forced open a door to a neighboring unit as part of their efforts to contain the blaze. Meanwhile, Wheeling crews cut through an overhead garage door to gain access. Engine 24 was positioned in the 'A' Sector, while Engine 23 laid a supply line from the hydrant to support operations. The fire had severely damaged the stairway, which was the only access point to the second-floor unit. According to reports, the fire originated in a wall between the garage and the front entryway.
