On Friday, a fire broke out at a residential home located at 948 N. Homan on Chicago’s west side. Dan McInerney, who was in the city at the time, captured the scene as the blaze was being controlled. He arrived after the fire had been brought under control and shared several photographs along with a detailed account of the incident.
The first alarm was dispatched to the scene, and Engine 12 responded immediately. Shortly after, Engine 4-4-11 arrived and requested an emergency still and box due to heavy fire spreading through a one-and-a-half-story house, with flames threatening an adjacent structure in sector 4. Engine 44 was the first to arrive and deployed a line on the first floor, while Truck 36 conducted primary and roof ventilation. However, the initial search revealed the house was vacant.
Engine 95 followed next, moving west on Augusta and setting up a line at the rear of the building. Engine 14 also performed a search of the exposure and conducted roof ventilation. Engine 76 then entered the adjacent structure with a hose line. Firefighters worked tirelessly under hot conditions, with temperatures reaching the upper 80s.
Several photos from Dan McInerney show the aftermath of the fire. One image captures Battalion 7 Chief Maria DeCaussin (RIT) standing next to Battalion 13 Chief Sean O'Driscoll near the building. Another shows Truck 36 being prepared for service as firefighters rest and rehydrate. Engine 44, the first engine on the scene, is seen with a line deployed. The rear of Truck 36 displays its 40- and 50-foot Bangor ladders. A West Side station T-shirt and a communications van parked nearby are also featured. Additional images highlight Engine 76's hydrant operations, Engine 95's position on Augusta, and firefighters repacking their hoses on Engine 44.
