On Thursday evening, April 2, 2020, just before 7 p.m., firefighters and police from Wheeling and Prospect Heights were called to the Chicago Executive Airport following a reported plane crash. According to the airport tower, a small aircraft with one person on board had landed but ended up in a drainage ditch alongside the runway, sitting in about two feet of water.
Wheeling Battalion 24 arrived first and found the pilot safely inside the aircraft, with no signs of immediate danger. The pilot was in good condition and was able to exit the plane on his own. He signed a medical release form at the scene, indicating he did not require further assistance. Only local units from the district remained at the location, while other responding crews were stood down.
A fire company stayed behind as a wrecker was called to remove the Cessna Skyhawk from the ditch. Emergency responders worked quickly to secure the area and ensure the situation remained under control. Several photos captured the aftermath, showing the aircraft in the ditch, emergency vehicles on the runway, and the equipment used during the response.
The incident highlighted the quick response of local emergency services, who handled the situation efficiently and without complications. No injuries were reported, and the pilot was released without further medical intervention. The event served as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and coordination in aviation-related emergencies.
