RED Center, the dispatch center for the Prospect Heights Fire Department, received a call around 4:00 PM today reporting a significant brush fire in the Potawatami Woods Forest Preserve, located off Portwine Road within the Prospect Heights Fire District. The caller described an area roughly the size of a football field engulfed in flames, prompting the call to be escalated to a working fire.
First responders arrived on scene and found a large fire burning through dense vegetation. As the situation became clearer, it was evident that the fire covered a vast area and required more resources than the initial response could provide. Firefighters from Prospect Heights, Wheeling, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods joined forces with the Long Grove Brush 55 unit, which had already made its way into the burn zone. However, the soft ground caused several vehicles to become stuck during the operation.
Larry Shapiro was on-site and captured several images documenting the efforts. One photo shows Long Grove Brush 55 returning to the area, while another highlights Prospect Heights firefighters using hand tools to control the fire at the edge of the burn. Despite their efforts, flames flared up quickly, making it difficult for crews to keep pace. A wildland progressive hose pack was deployed by a Long Grove officer, and additional water tenders and brush units were brought in as the alarm was elevated to a MABAS Brush Fire Box Alarm.
The incident coincided with another large brush fire in Barrington, which also required similar resources, creating challenges for dispatchers. Additional units from Countryside, Buffalo Grove, Grayslake, Elk Grove Township, and Fox River Grove arrived to assist. As the fire spread through tall grasses, thick black smoke and intense heat were visible for miles. Water was deployed to combat the flames, and multiple hoselines were stretched into position.
