Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from every part of the house. Stephen Wilcox photo Stephen Wilcox has shared a detailed account and photos of another fire that took place in western Dupage County (MABAS Division 12) last month. Here’s what he reported: Wheaton Fire: 419 N. Ellis on 6/17/11 at 0447 hours. The structure, built around 1900, was a balloon frame with lath and plaster walls and knob-and-tube wiring. Conditions were warm and humid when crews arrived. The fire was fully involved on all floors and in the attic. Neighbors believed someone might still be inside. The extra alarm response covered these three key areas. Multiple handlines and six ground ladders were deployed. The family had just returned from the Far East.  A Wheaton firefighter vents windows on the side of the house while companies make entry. VENT, ENTER, SEARCH. Stephen Wilcox photo After clearing the window, the firefighter enters the bedroom for a primary search. He quickly checks the room, exits, moves the ladder, and repeats the process. Stephen Wilcox photo     As the sun rises, firefighters are seen cleaning up near the 20-story Wheaton Center. Wheaton Truck 417 was the first unit on scene. Stephen Wilcox photo The fire originated beneath the staircase, which contributed to its rapid spread.
