On the night of September 19, 2012, around 11 p.m., the Robbins Fire Department was dispatched for a reported structure fire at a vacant house located on 137th Street and Monticello. Along with the initial response from Robbins, assistance was provided by Garden Homes FPD, Markham FD, Blue Island FD, and Dixmoor FD, all arriving with engine companies. Robbins Engine 2913 and Tower 2914 were among the first to arrive, finding smoke coming from the rear of a two-flat, vacant building that was under renovation. The fire was primarily on the first floor, with flames extending to the second floor.
As the situation developed, command requested a Full Still off Box #2909, which brought in Midlothian FD with a squad and Palos Heights FPD with an ambulance. The fire was eventually brought under control approximately one and a half hours later. It was later confirmed that the correct address was 3617 S. Monticello Avenue.
