Two years after receiving a federal grant, the Antioch Fire Department is preparing to welcome its newest fire engine with a special event that harks back to the days of horse-drawn wagons. The department will host a ceremony featuring the traditional rituals of “wetting down†the new truck, pushing out the old one, and bringing in the new.
The event is scheduled for May 29 at 7 p.m. at Fire Station 1, located at 835 Holbek Drive. It’s open to the public.
“In the past, when horses pulled fire engines, the tradition was to wet down the wheels and wipe them off before pushing the fire pump into the station,†said Fire Chief John Nixon. “They did this to protect the wooden spokes from damage.â€
The new truck will have a unique look—featuring a black roof and red body, which is different from most of Antioch’s fleet that typically has white roofs.
“The apparatus committee felt this was a great opportunity to celebrate the department’s upcoming 100th anniversary next March and adopt a new tradition,†Nixon explained. “Black over red is very popular in Chicagoland.â€
The truck will also display a newly designed Antioch Fire Department emblem.
