The new Antioch engine will be stationed at Station 1, while the ALF will move to Station 3. The 1973 Pirsch unit has been retired. Antioch Fire District Engine 1 was built by UST on a 2011 Spartan Metrostar chassis. It features a 1,500-GPM pump and 750 gallons of water. Photo by Jeff Rudolph The Daily Herald reported that Antioch will hold a “wet-down†ceremony for the new engine on May 29th. Two years after receiving a federal grant, the Antioch Fire Department is preparing to welcome its newest fire engine with a special event. The department will celebrate with a ceremony reminiscent of the old days, including the traditional "wet-down" of the new truck, as well as pushing out the old one. The event is scheduled for May 29 at 7 p.m. at Fire Station 1, 835 Holbek Drive, and is open to the public. "In the past, when horse-drawn engines were used, they would wet down the wheels to keep the wooden spokes from drying out," said Fire Chief John Nixon. "This tradition continues today as a way to honor our history." The new engine will have a unique look—featuring a black roof and red body, unlike most of the department’s current trucks, which have white roofs. "The apparatus committee felt this was a great opportunity to mark the department's upcoming 100th anniversary next March and adopt a new tradition," Nixon explained. "Black over red is popular in Chicagoland." The engine will also display a newly designed Antioch Fire Department emblem. Read the full article here.
