Schiller Park (Division 20) recently welcomed a brand-new Pierce Impel engine in March, marking an important upgrade for the station. At first glance, the Impel and the Velocity may look similar since they share the same cab design, but there are key differences in features, trim levels, and overall cost that set them apart.
The new Pierce Impel 1,500/500/30A engine is now stationed at Schiller Park, offering enhanced capabilities for emergency response. This model features a low hose bed design, which has gained popularity in recent years—similar to the style long used in New York County. The design not only improves accessibility but also enhances maneuverability in tight spaces.
Inside the engine, the pump panel includes a foam system and color-coded gauges, providing firefighters with clear and intuitive controls during operations. The unit was originally built in 2007 as a demonstrator for Pierce, which explains the lack of chevron striping on the rear. It was recently acquired by Schiller Park and has already been put to use in training exercises.
Last week, Engine 455 participated in a joint training session with Chicago and Bensenville firefighters at a site being demolished as part of the O’Hare Modernization Project. The exercise allowed crews to practice using hand lines and other equipment in real-world conditions. A full photo gallery and video segment of the event are available for viewing online.
This new engine represents a significant investment in the safety and readiness of Schiller Park’s firefighters, ensuring they have the tools needed to respond effectively to emergencies in their community.
